3 questions to ask yourself for more heartfelt sales copy

A person holds a pen and writes on a piece of paper next to a white mug.

Have you ever felt like you need to take a hot shower after trying to write sales copy? I’m right there with you. This is my job, and I can still get a little clammy when it comes to selling my own stuff.

Here’s why: if you’re a conscious business owner, there can be some tough feelings that come up around selling.

It feels wrong.

It feels tricky.

It feels gross.

There’s good reason a lot of us feel this way. Traditional marketing tactics can be all of those things, and then some. Like, downright unethical.

So what’re you to do? When you have offers that you know can genuinely help people, yet you keep coming up against the roadblocks your heart sets against selling?

You take a deep breath… and ground yourself by connecting with your purpose. Your purpose for starting your business. Your purpose for continuing to show up even on the rough days.

Here’s why: when you connect to your purpose, you’re ignited from the inside out to follow through on your mission, even when obstacles inevitably crop up or the going gets tough… or when the selling feels particularly icky.

So before you get into the nitty gritty of writing sales copy… let’s start with you. Take a few minutes to get grounded in your “why:” why do you do what you do? What lights you up about your work?

The following set of questions are just an itty bitty excerpt from my free guide, 20 Questions To Clarify Your Brand Voice So You Can Talk To Your Audience From The Heart. If you want to nab the full thing totally free of charge, just pop your email in the form below!

Otherwise, let’s jump into the q’s so you can get grounded and sell from a place of inspired purpose.

I recommend setting aside about 15 minutes to free write on the following prompts. No sweat if you don’t have that much time, take what you can to get even a little more centered before you jump into working on your sales copy.

And if you notice it helps in any sort of way, I’d love to hear about it! Drop me a comment below to let me know your thoughts.

So grab something to sip on (I’ve got my chai here with me), get comfy, and let your pencil loose on the paper!

  1. What made you start your business? Free write about what you saw was missing in the world or experienced for yourself, and what made you want to create a business to address that.

  2. What do you love about your business? List out everything that lights you up about your day-to-day work and the products or services you bring into the world.

  3. How do you want to feel when writing your copy? When selling to your people? Free write the top few emotions that come to mind. Then jot down a few thoughts on how you might access that feeling while working on your business goals.

Bonus option: feel free to hang up your answers somewhere you can easily see them as a jolt of inspiration to ground into your purpose whenever you need to.
